Because Yellow Skin is so Alluring

Let me just say this - 2011 was a very interesting year - one in which I was very grateful for good medical insurance. From Jack's stay in the hospital, to Cole's broken leg, then back to Jack's other stay in the hospital, I don't know what we would have done without it.

Unfortunately, I got to make good use of the insurance as well. In December, I came down with the The Mystery Disease, which involved heavy bouts of nausea, yellow skin, and (TMI) dark pee. The Mystery Disease has made an appearance before - about 5 years ago I had the same thing. This time, I tried to get into a doctor right away so The Mystery Disease could be properly identified. After quite a few tests, my doctor called with a diagnosis - Epstein Barr.

Apparently, Epstein Barr is a common virus that most people get. The symptoms are cold-like (sore throat, cough, etc.), but for some reason the virus likes to attack my liver. Also, for some reason, I'm one of the special few who gets it more than once in his/her lifetime. The treatment is lots of rest. And I mean a lot. My doctor wanted me to stay home from work for 6 weeks. Oh really? That should be easy enough. It's not like I had a baby this year and used up all of my FMLA and vacation time, or that I started a new job 3 months ago and want to make a good impression. The nurse acted like I was refusing cancer treatment by refusing to stay home.

Anyway, hopefully, things will mellow out in the next few weeks and I will be back on my feet. I'm hopeful this will be the last time I get this, but who knows? In the meantime, thanks to all my family and friends for their help, concerned phone calls, and love. Bryce, as always, was awesome. He deserves a medal for putting up with me, especially for the night I shook him awake at 2:00am and said I was driving myself to the emergency room. I think my new favorite blogger put it right: "Every day he hoped to be released from the chains of sick spousal bondage, a most frightful state in which one spouse must endure the other spouse's incessant delusional pecking. It's like, the sick spouse wants to make sure that the non-sick spouse knows just how sick she is, and the non-sick spouse, while totally aware that the sick spouse is really very sick and he's very sorry that she's sick, is doing everything he can to forget about how sick the sick spouse is, just so that he can live his damn life."

So, here's to 2012, and being able to live our damn lives!

I am so glad you wrote all of this down so you can look back if you ever need to, although you probably would just as soon forget the whole thing. My hats off to you and Bryce for all you have been through this year. Love you guys!
